It is due to a harmless viral activity in the embryonic stage of this plant's seed.. nearly all the variegation in the Aroid family are due to the same cause..
Viruses attack on the DNA of the living tissues and make their own genetic material with the help of host's genetic material.. it is hypothesized that these variegation are due to some cells with missing genes of chlorophyll production.. these cells are not self sustaining and need the green part of the plant to support them...
